Dentdale Weekend
6th - 8th October 2000
Organisers: Stefan Bradley & Dawn McCartney
A total of six hardy souls braved the rain to camp at Dent, southeast Cumbria - home of the famous Dent Brewery.
Joining them for two evenings of quality beer in the Sun Inn were four more who had decided it was more comfortable to sleep under a roof in Kendal than under canvas in Dent. Mike Cowie finished the cast list by turning up for breakfast on Sunday!
The weekend involved precious little walking. Thanks to the presence of Footleg and Caroline, the conversation on Friday night turned to caving, and as Leeds Uni Caving Club
were lurking nearby with a coachload of Freshers, we all decided to join them in what looked like being a very wet morning.
It was definitely wet - but a pint or two of tea in Inglesports soon improved matters and we were off to the caves, kitted out in borrowed caving gear and wellies hired from Bernies Cafe.
We soon found ourselves disappearing down a small pothole up near Ribblehead and crawling along through underground torrents in the semi-darkness. It was probably drier than being above ground, and a damn site more fun!
Saturday night brought an excellent meal and a lot of beer, which was perfect for the aching muscles. The Kendal contingent couldn't be tempted into camping, and poor Dawn had to remain sober to drive them back at last orders - a true martyr!
Not much was done on Sunday, apart from having a cracking fry-up and driving home - most of us reflecting on what had been a walking weekend without the walking...
