Teesdale Weekend
4th - 6th May 2002
Organiser: Wendy Smith

Wendy cordially invites you all to sample the delights of the northern Pennines - using the pleasant Upper Teesdale as an ideal springboard to the fells.

Camping at Holwick, upstream from Middleton-in-Teesdale and only a kilometre away from the Low Force waterfall, we'll not only be close to some fairly rarely frequented fells, we'll also be in walking distance of a great pub - what more could you want?

You may notice from the dates that this trip is over SATURDAY AND SUNDAY NIGHTS. As this is a bank holiday weekend Wendy thought it best to make use of it, and would like to extend an open invite for all to stay at her house on the Friday night before heading over to Teesdale on the Saturday. If you'd like directions to Wendy's place please email us and we'll pass them on.

If you fancy coming along then you can just turn up, but if you want to make sure we know you're coming then please email us.

The Venue
Campsite: To be confirmed, one of the ones at Holwick village, NY915270
Directions: Head to Barnard Castle in County Durham, and take the B6277 north along Teesdale to the village of Middleton in Teesdale. Just after passing through the villages of Mickleton and Lonton the road bends right to cross the River Tees as it enters Middleton - do not take this road over the bridge. Instead take the minor road along the south bank of the river to the village of Holwick.
Facilities: To be confirmed
Pub: The Strathmore Arms at Holwick.
Review from Protz on Beer tells us that this pub should be a bit special...
"The Strathmore Arms at Holwick, Co Durham (off B6277, back road in Teesdale; 01533 640362) has its own smokehouse where publican Alwyn Hawdon produces smoked cheese -- Blue Stilton, Blue Wensleydale and White Wensleydale -- plus bacon, trout and salmon. Smoked cheese naturally features on the menu in its own right or in such dishes as chicken breast stuffed with salmon and smoked cheese sauce. You can buy all the smoked food in the pub shop called the Smoking Poacher. Beers include Black Bull Bitter, Ruddles Best and Theakstons Best. The 17th-century, stone-built inn lies under Holwick Scars near the Pennine Way and is in ideal walking country. There's a warm and welcoming bar on the ground floor, such traditional pub games as darts, dominoes, skittles and shove ha'penny, live music upstairs at the weekend, and two bedrooms."

Why should we come to Teesdale?  Not only is there the pretty village of Middleton-in-Teesdale to explore, along with the impressive Gibsons Cave and High and Low Force waterfalls, there's also a lot of good walking to be had around the head of the River Tees. The Pennine Way (yes, that path!) passes through the area, and can provide a method of reaching places like High Cup Nick, and such wonderfully named Nuttalls as Bellbeaver Rigg and Bink Moss. Lovely!
