The Wild Rover

LUHC Alumni Newsletter no. 3; February 2000

It's newsletter time again, folks. As the last issue was the Winter edition I suppose this should be the Spring one, but there's very little of that in evidence right now! Still - soon the birds will be in the trees, the sun will be in the sky, and all our juices will be flowing again (apparently).
Why not sit yourselves back and harken to the sounds of hikers growing old...

DUBLIN 2001 - The Real Millennium

As well as being in the 16% of the population who can spell millennium, I am also one of those people who can spot a good pissup when it happens. This was a good pissup, and the main action happened in the Porterhouse, Dublin - a cracking brewpub just off Temple Bar.

Over 20 Hikers took the trip across the Irish Sea on Saturday 30th. Lindsay Woodward, as our intrepid organiser, got us a comfy hostel room in Kinlay House, and we all spent a great couple of days seeing the sights and drinking the beer.

Overall a cracking trip - strange to see us in such a big city for a change!

You'll be able to read all about the trip and see some photos on the website soon, but for now here's a slightly dodgy collection of people to scare the evil spirits from your PC...

All Quiet on the Hiking Front

After a busy couple of months after the Summer Ball its all gone a bit quiet in organising walking trips. A combination of bad weather and not wanting to tread on the toes of the current Hiking Club has seen all the planned Alumni weekends vanish like a well-oiled Cabinet Minister.

But it won't be long until the good weather is back with us again and trips are round the corner - I hear whispers of a Peak District weekend in the next few months, and I'll be organising something myself for the Summer that's a bit out of the ordinary. There's also talk of arranging a barbecue in Lancaster over the Summer at some point, of which more will appear soon.

Don't forget - any of you can organise a walking weekend, or just advertise an informal Sunday on the hill near you, via the website or mailing list.

Website News

The new site at http://www.luhc-alumni.org is now well and truly up and running. Since the launch just before Christmas there have been over 300 visits to the new site. We're still working on the new Contact List, and the Exec Lists, but other than that we're proud to be able to bring you a functional, interactive website for you to use as you wish. I hope you're all getting some enjoyment out of it!

You can contribute anything you like, from pictures and stories to just the odd comment on the forum.

The Newsletter

You might notice this issue is a little on the thin side. Well - that's because nobody's got anything to report or sell! Nothing to report means less work for me but doesn't make for such exciting reading, I'm afraid.

Don't panic, though - I'm confident there'll be much more to tell you in the next issue, due out in May.

LUHC Annual Dinner

That's right - its Hiking Club Annual Dinner time again. If any of you are thinking of going to get aled with the students this year, please email Becky right away to ensure that you'll get a ticket!

This year it's at the Hampson House Hotel, Galgate on February 16th and it costs £16. There's a James Bond theme, and I'm reliably informed that the outgoing Prez, Mr Nick "Military Precision" Mattock will stroke your pussy for you, should you bring it along.

Engagement Ring prices soar!

As you may have spotted on the News Page, Chris Bracchi and Jo Brown have got engaged... joining the long list of 90's hikers tying the knot. In my reckoning that's at least five engagements so far - and of course Kev and Nic Palfreyman who are already married! Best keep an eye on the News Page to see who's the next Hiker to drop to one knee...

Come on chaps - Valentines Day is just round the corner... ;)

Lisaandjohn.com - update!

Yes - they're back! Our intrepid travellers have returned from their round the world exploits (just in time to go to Dublin for New Year, actually) - with a suspicious lack of suntans and a bagful of photos which would make you envious! John and Lisa were fortunate enough to escape poisonous spiders and bemoaned the apparent misery of spending time in Tahiti. My heart bleeds... :)

...SPAM SPAM SPAM SPAM SPAM SPAM CHIPS AND SPAM.

That's all for now, pop pickers. More hot newsletter action in a few months - don't forget to get your articles and classified ads in in plenty of time for the next issue!

I'm off for some spam.

Soupy-Twist,

Mike.
